About Dusi This site is about a village called Dusi (Tamil word for dust), situated in Tamilnadu, India. If you have a sufficiently detailed map, you will find Dusi at the following latitude/longitude: 12° 77' N and 79° 68' E. Note: It appears that there are other villages with this same name (in Tamilnadu and in Andhra Pradesh, and in many other countries).
Our Dusi, a tiny
village (see left side bottom corner of the map), is in Tamilnadu, in India,
on the banks of Palaar (River of Milk),
not far (about 10 km) from the sacred town of
Kancheepuram
(Conjeevaram, Kanchipuram, Kanjivaram, Kanjeevaram) ,
and is about 70 km from Madras (or Chennai), in Tamilnadu State, South
India. Click anywhere on the red circle (on the map),
to see some
pictures of Dusi. In addition to its famous temples,
Kancheepuram is famous for its
silk sarees. Wearing silk sarees, particularly during important events
(e.g. marriages) is a tradition in South India.
Lord Varadharaja Perumal, the presiding deity of Kanchipuram, visits and blesses every house in Dusi village, on every Chithira Pournami day (around April 15). "Chithira pournami" means in Tamil, "full moon night of the Tamil month of Chithirai" (it is also the very first full-moon of the Tamil calendar). This event has given rise to the popular practice called "Nila sappadu" (literally meaning "moonlight dinner"). People go to the banks of the nearest river (or the terrace of their house), and enjoy a traditional dinner, in moonlight. This village also has one of the five biggest reservoirs of Tamil Nadu Mamandur Lake. It is also said that, Mahatma Gandhi was lodged briefly in the Police Station of Dusi.
